LET'S GET TO THE ROOT

Navigate through our scalp + hair guide created for you to learn more about your hair.

THE HAIR ROOTINE

ROOTED Scalp + Haircare was created to educate you about your scalp + hair and help to create a ROOTine suitable for your specific hair needs. Through our study of Trichology and our understanding of the importance behind creating a balance of protein, hydration and moisture, we, with the help of Chemists, have formulated high quality professional products that effectively respond to the needs of your scalp + hair.

PROTEIN OVERLOAD

Our hair is made up of a protein called Keratin plus water, lipids, minerals and pigments, so we have to add protein back into our hair to help rebuild it from the styling we throw at it, but sometimes we can overuse protein enriched products and add too much protein into the hair shaft which leads to an imbalance of protein, hydration and moisture which leads to unhealthy hair.

Hair symptoms

  • Feels rough like straw, especially when wet

  • When a single wet strand is stretched, hair has no elasticity and breaks

  • Breaks easily wet or dry

  • Curl pattern won't form anymore (not due to heat damage)

  • Loss of shine. Hair is dull

  • Hair is shedding more than usual

Protein strand test for you to do

Wet your hair for a few minutes and grab a single strand. Hold the hair with one hand and stretch it with the other hand. If the hair does not stretch at all and breaks easily, the hair has too much protein and needs hydration and moisture. We want our hair to have enough strength to bounce back after being stretched.

Our Solution

To combat protein overload you will need to use products that focus more on hydrating the hair instead of strengthening the hair. This will allow for the hair shaft to begin its process of restoring the loss of  hydration and moisture that it needs to be balanced. In result, your hair will begin to shine again, curl pattern will restore itself and elasticity will once again be present.

HYDRATE YOUR SCALP +HAIR

With Our Refreshing Conditioner

Hydrate dry strands using our products that are enriched with a blend of super hydrating botanicals, such as Yarrow, Lemon Balm, Comfrey with provitamin b5, Aloe and Avocado oil.

HYDRAL FATIGUE

Hygral fatigue (moisture overload) is the loss of proper moisture in the hair shaft. When you add too much moisture to your hair, it can break down the protein that keeps your hair strong and healthy resulting in weak hair stands.. Hygral fatigue can be caused by many things including, overuse of moisturizing shampoo's, over conditioning (constant overnight conditioning or letting a deep conditioner sit too long on the hair), constantly wetting your hair without letting it dry completely, or not using products that contain protein at all

Hair symptoms

  • Feels extremely soft, gummy + mushy when wet

  • Feels dry

  • Very stretchy

  • Hair won't hold a curl or curl pattern is looser

  • Hair is flat + limp. Always feels weighed down

  • Hair breakage

Moisture strand test for you to do

Wet your hair for a few minutes and grab a single strand. Hold the hair with one hand and stretch it with the other hand. If the hair stretches far and does not return back to its normal state when you let go or stretches far and then breaks, the hair has too much moisture and needs protein. We want our hair to have just enough hydration to stretch without over stretching or breaking.

Our solution

To combat hygral fatigue you will need to use products that focus more on strengthening the hair instead of hydrating and moisturizing. This will allow for the hair shaft to begin its process of restoring the loss of protein that it needs to be balanced. Using the right shampoo, mask, conditioner, and styling products to keep moisture and protein in balance will be key.

STRENGTHEN YOUR SCALP + HAIR

With Our Sanctifying Collection

Strengthen weak strands using our products that are enriched with amino acids, which are designed to support a healthy hair structure. The proteins in our products are hydrolyzed to optimize absorption.

POROSITY

Hair porosity is the hair shaft's ability to absorb and retain moisture. Hair porosity can be determined by genetics, chemical treatments (relaxers, perms, coloring) and heat styling. The hair shaft is made up of 3 layers, the outermost layer called the cuticle, the middle layer called the cortex and the innermost layer called the medulla. The porosity of your hair affects how well moisture passes in and out of the outermost layer of your hair. Different hair porosity types require different amounts of moisture and protein for strength and shine.

Porosity types

  • Low porosity

  • Medium/normal Porosity

  • High Porosity

How to determine your porosity

You can quickly test your hair porosity by taking a strand of your hair and letting it float it in a glass of water. Make sure your hair is clean and free of products before you perform this test. This is important as oily hair will float no matter what. Once you've put it in the water, let the hair strand sit for a few moments and observe how the strand behaves. If your strand of hair sinks to the bottom immediately, it means that it's likely highly porous. Sinking can indicate that the hair has quickly absorbed water. Medium, or normal porosity hair, will sink slowly, or float somewhere in the middle of the glass for a few minutes before eventually sinking to the bottom. Hair with low porosity will remain floating on the surface of the water for a long time before sinking.

Low Porosity

Low porosity hair is characterized by the outer cuticle being so tightly closed that it creates a smooth texture which keeps water (hydration + moisture) from entering the interior of the hair shaft. That tight cuticle layer means your hair is resistant to absorbing moisture and rejects water, no matter how hard you try to get it wet. This is important to understand because without something like heat/steam to open the cuticle of the hair shaft, the hair will not receive the hydration + moisture from deep treatments or leave-ins that it needs to stay healthy. If it takes forever to get your hair wet in the shower or products feel like they just sit on top of your hair, you more than likely have low porosity hair.

Our Low Porosity ROOTine recommendation

  • Keep the hair detoxed so that there's no buildup

  • Use less protein enriched conditioners as the hair cuticle is already tightly closed which prevents moisture from entering in easily

  • Always Use heat, steam or mist while deep conditioning to open the hair cuticle for penetration

  • Use products that contain humectants to draw moisture to the hair

  • Saturate the hair fully with warm water an scrunch for at least 3 minutes before shampooing

Medium Porosity

Hair with a medium, or normal porosity level, is the easiest to manage because it has a cuticle layer that is half way open. This means that hydration + moisture can enter into the hair shaft easily but because the cuticle is only half way open, that same moisture won't escape quickly which is.a great thing! While normal porosity hair is easy to manage, you still need to consistently alternate moisturizing and strengthening products to ensure your hair retains its healthy protein + moisture balance.

Our Medium Porosity ROOTine recommendation

  • Use a rotation of a gentle cleansing and detoxifying shampoo

  • Weekly or monthly use a rotation of hydration + moisture enriched products and strengthening products

  • Don't overuse heat, steam or mist with deep conditioning. Use these only every other time you deep condition

  • Use light moisturizers

Our selected Refreshing products will keep your scalp + hair hydrated and moisturized while our selected Sanctifying products will keep your scalp + hair strengthened along with a lightweight leave-in serum. Be sure to rotate the different conditioners each wash day to keep your medium porosity hair well balanced.

High Porosity

Highly porous hair needs a lot of extra care as it has a cuticle layer that is very open with gaps throughout the hair shaft, meaning that hydration is let in easily, but is also loss very quickly because the strands don’t lay flat enough for retention to take place. This leaves the hair dry and prone to damage as products evaporate before they're able to do their job. High porosity can be genetic or caused by straightening your hair using the wrong flat irons for your hair texture, using too much heat, blow-drying incorrectly, bleaching or using other chemical applications.

Signs of highly porous hair

  • Hair quickly floats to the bottom during water strand test

  • Hair sucks up products quickly

  • Frizzy hair

  • Tangles easily

  • Dull hair strands that lacks shine

  • Air dries very quickly

  • Doesn't take a long time to get wet

  • Looks and feels dry

  • Prone to breakage

Our High Porosity ROOTine recommendation

  • Use a hydrating deep conditioning treatment to ensure that hydration is going right down to the core of the hair shaft

  • Use a hydrating conditioner

  • Use a strengthening daily serum to gain more strength and fill in the gaps

  • Use a leave-in with thermal protection

  • Use styling products that contain heavier butters like Shea Butter to lock in moisture and prevent your hair from absorbing more water than it needs

  • Use only low heat while blow drying or air dry

  • Do not use heat, steam or mist while deep conditioning unless it has a cool setting

  • Rinse deep conditioners out with COLD water

  • Dry with a cotton T-shirt

  • BE GENTLE with your hair

PROTECTIVE STYLES + LOCS SCALP CARE

Protective styles can be a great thing but, they also can end up doing more damage to our hair than good if we aren't properly preparing our scalp + hair and also maintaining them both during this style.  Protective styles can include sew ins, braids, twists, wigs, crochet, etc.

We have included Locs into this section because they too deserve a ROOTINE that will keep the scalp clean and hair hydrated. Locs desire healthy scalp care and attention to their ROOTS; they love products that provide moisture and detoxification to remove buildup and keep the scalp clean and hydrated.

How To Prep Your Scalp + Hair For A Protective Style

  • Always be sure to properly detox and cleanse the scalp by shampooing 2-3 times focusing on your SCALP. This is important because your hair will be tucked away for some time and buildup sitting on the scalp can cause hair loss + scalp issues

  • Always incorporate BOTH a conditioner and hair mask that delivers hydration + protein so that the hair has enough strength and hydration while being braided/manipulated

  • Always be sure to receive a professional dust or trim before each protective style. This is VERY important for length retention and keeping split ends away allowing for them not to become thin overtime. **Be sure to see a stylist that isn't scissor happy**

  • Always use leave-ins as they protect your hair from any type of friction, season weather changes like cold weather and UV rays from the sun

  • Be sure not to use any heavy products on the scalp that will cause buildup but instead products that contain water as the first ingredient that are lightweight and deliver stimulation and hydration for growth

  • If you have a sew in NEVER get your braids wet or wash your braids, only your extensions and leave out. This will encourage bacteria to grow from the hidden moisture left on the scalp + hair since both are not 100% exposed. Even with sitting under the dryer, we don't recommend it! This is why its important not to use heavy products on your scalp prior to your install so that your scalp won't have heavy buildup

  • If you have twists or braids, be sure to daily use a water based scalp serum. Also, an antibacterial root spray to keep your follicles unclogged, fresh and hydrated. This leaves room for the scalp serum to properly penetrate and work

  • Always keep the edges moisturized

  • Be sure not to keep a protective style longer than 5 weeks

Our Locs ROOTine recommendation

  • Prevent build up on the scalp + hair with a detoxifying shampoo

  • Stimulate & soothe the scalp with a scalp conditioner

  • Moisturize the scalp to prevent dryness with a antibacterial root spray and scalp serum

SCALP ISSUES + HAIR LOSS

Buildup | Oily Scalp | Thinning Hair | Scalp Odor  | Itchy Scalp

ABOUT BUILDUP + OILY SCALP + HAIR LOSS

The scalp has a lot  of sweat glands and sebaceous (oil) glands, which produces oily sebum. Things like diet and warm weather can increase the scalp's oil sebum production. When that sebum is mixed with dead skin cells, this is where buildup on the scalp comes from. What's in that buildup? Sebum, skin flakes, pollution, and product buildup. How does this effect your hair growth journey? When the hair follicle becomes clogged it can prevent fragile, new hairs from growing; causing the hair follicles to die resulting in hair loss and thinning hair. This buildup also prevents topical growth stimulators from penetrating the derma papilla.

ABOUT SCALP ODOR

The sweat glands on your scalp are called apocrine glands (they secrete sweat via canals along hair follicles). Sweat from your apocrine glands secrete a more fatty, odorous sweat, versus eccrine sweat, which is more watery and cools the skin. As with other body odors, a scalp odor is often caused by sweat interacting with bacteria on the skin. As the bacteria living on your scalp + hair break down the fatty apocrine sweat, a distinct "scalp odor" is produced. This is even more noticeable when you are stressed, if you exercise or sweat in your head a lot and in the warmer months . Other factors that can cause scalp odor are  Seborrheic Dermatitis, Dandruff, Psoriasis, Hormonal Imbalance, Over/Under-Washing, Pollution and Diet.

Our recommendation

  • Sebum buildup needs stimulators + decongestants, like peppermint oil, tea tree oil and glycolic acid, to break down and dissolve the surface buildup and the buildup within the follicle to promote healthier hair growth

  • Washing your hair on a consistent basis is key to keeping your scalp clean. This way, bacteria doesn't have a chance to over produce on the scalp. We highly suggest washing your scalp + hair every week like clockwork

  • Avoid using hot water as much as possible as it can dehydrate your scalp and risk excessive sebum production.

  • Do not do protective style that cover the scalp. Keep the scalp free and exposed to air

  • Regularly use our Antibacterial Root Refresher Spray to keep the scalp clean and under control
